What happens after a shopper adds to cart from the wishlist?
Two settings decide what happens when a shopper adds an item from their wishlist: whether the item stays in the wishlist, and whether the browser moves to the cart. This page documents all four combinations and where to set them. Both settings are in Customize Wishlist Appearance, in the wishlist display section.
The two settings
| Setting | Default | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Remove from wishlist after adding to cart | Off | Is the item still wanted after purchase? |
| Redirect to cart after adding item to cart | Off (redirect on) | Should the shopper jump to the cart or keep shopping? |
The four combinations
| Remove after add | Redirect to cart | Shopper experience |
|---|---|---|
| Off | Redirect on | Item stays in the wishlist; browser moves to the cart. The default: shoppers can buy now and save the item for later |
| Off | Redirect off | Item stays; a popup confirms the add with a View Cart button; the shopper keeps browsing the wishlist |
| On | Redirect off | Item leaves the wishlist in place with a confirmation popup; the list only holds what is not yet in the cart |
| On | Redirect on | Item leaves the wishlist; browser moves straight to the cart |
Choosing for your store
- Gift and multi occasion wishlists: keep items after adding (remove off). Shoppers buy one item now and keep the rest saved.
- Reorder and shopping list stores: remove items after adding. The wishlist behaves like a list to empty.
- Conversion focused stores: keep the default redirect so shoppers land in the cart beside checkout.
- Browsing focused stores: turn the redirect off so shoppers stay in the wishlist and keep adding.
How the rules interact with Add All to Cart
The same settings drive the bulk action. Add All to Cart adds every in stock item, skips out of stock ones, then follows your remove and redirect choices. Details: Add All to Cart.
Every add is recorded
Each add from the wishlist, single or bulk, is logged as an “Added To Cart” action with the product price. That is what powers the “Products added to cart” insights on your dashboard. See How activity is tracked.
