Do shoppers need an account to use the wishlist?

Wishlist Hero works without accounts by default: guests save items freely, and their lists merge into an account the moment they log in. This page documents both access modes, the login popup you can require, and the merge behavior at login. Set the mode in Customize Wishlist Appearance with Require customers to login before using wishlist.

Guest mode (default)

Shoppers add to the wishlist with no login. The list is stored in the cloud and referenced from their browser, so it survives reloads and return visits. When the shopper logs in later, the guest list merges into their account list automatically.

Guest mode maximizes saves: nothing stands between the shopper and the heart button. See the merge details in Guest wishlists and merge.

Login required mode

Turn on Require customers to login before using wishlist to gate the wishlist behind an account. When a guest clicks the wishlist button, a popup invites them to log in or create an account first.

Both popup texts are editable in the languages section:

  • The message, defaulting to “Please login to save your wishlist across devices.”
  • The login button label, defaulting to “Login”

Login required mode suits stores where wishlists tie into accounts: reorder lists for B2B buyers, saved sizes for members, or loyalty programs.

Which login page opens

By default the popup uses Shopify’s current account login, including New Customer Accounts. If your store uses classic accounts or a custom login page, set Custom Login URL in the App Configuration embed so the popup sends shoppers to the right place.

One note on modes

There are two modes, not three: guest with merge, and login required. There is no separate “login required to view only” mode; when login is required it gates both adding and viewing.
